Welcome to the Maine Fibershed
Maine Fibershed is a regional fiber system dedicated to connecting, empowering, and rebuilding Maine’s fiber and textile communities, and to promoting environmentally sustainable practices that protect our natural resources.
Maine Fibershed’s mission is to build a transparent, environmentally friendly, sustainable, equitable, and circular textile community through educational programming and industry development. In short, it takes good soil to raise healthy animals and plant fibers as well as healthy dye plants. When our community works together to protect the quality of our fibers through natural dyes, chemical-free processing, local makers, and responsible upcycling that keeps fibers out of our landfills, we have fiber that can be returned to the soil as compost and fertilizer, free of fossil fuels, pesticides, and herbicides.
Maine Fibershed serves the needs of the entire state of Maine, from southern Maine to the Canadian border, and the Gulf of Maine to Vermont. Maine is known for its hardy, resourceful, creative and independent people. We are honored to serve their needs.
We acknowledge that we are on unceded Wabanaki (People of the Dawnland) land. The Wabanaki tribes honored and nurtured these lands for over 10,000 years before they were stolen. Maine Fibershed wishes to create a new, inclusive, transparent way forward that respects the wisdom of our elder people, plants, animals and earth. We are ready to listen and learn, and to go forward at the pace of rebuilt trust.
